The area that is now Long Beach was first settled by the Tongva and Chumash Native American tribes thousands of years ago. The first Europeans to explore the area were members of an expedition led by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. In 1784, the area was claimed by the Spanish crown and became part of the province of Alta California.

In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain and the area that is now Long Beach became part of the Mexican state of California. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, the area was captured by American forces and became part of the United States.

In 1900, the area that is now Long Beach was incorporated as a city. The city grew rapidly in the early 20th century due to its location on the Los Angeles Harbor and its connection to the growing railroad network.
